Every step in this programme has provided us with opportunities to explore and be more creative on the job as Information Scientists.
Everyone of us that applied for this programme must of thought of many things. As the old local christian religion saying goes in my country, "we are united by our gathering, but diversified by our requests", we have a purpose to to successfully get admitted for the CPD programme, however the purposes are quite different.
Some wanted to learn new skills so that they will be able to perform better and meet the demands of their workplace. They are often overwhelmed and this has brought upon them feelings of being incompetent. Some research-driven individuals crave for more knowledge so that they will be able play excellently better as Information Scientists. Some others wanted to learn new things solely so that their workplaces could meet the demands of their clients. They want to learn new ways, technologies, methods of doing thing in their libraries. Very few, most probably none applied wondering if there are new things to learn in the field. Regardless of the purpose, everyone hoped to be admitted.
The ordeals of securing a visa was demanding, the demands co-related with the peculiarities of each delegates' country. Securing the visa paved way for the wait for the d-day. Eventually, we had to leave behind many things dear to us. Wives, parents, child(ren). I think I can say categorically, I ...
Right from the curtain raisers, the tone was set for the most popular topic of the programme- THE SOCIAL MEDIA IN LIBRARY. Right through all the sessions, there were some concepts that were gleaned in the lectures and messages, they were-CHOICE, CREATIVITY and INNOVATION.
One of the major lessons/habits I have learnt in this programme is the writing through the compulsory blogging assignment. I call it a writing/blogging culture learning because I have always known how to blog as my first blog was created in 2010 (see orikiwa.wordpress.com), the only article on it was published in 2010. If I can blog one in two days, it means I would have created fifteen articles in 30 days, compared to one in four years. However, blogging is a countinous thing which involve much discpline and creativity. Naturally, I do not do things for want of reason, I therefore thing my coleagues should learn to be creative in their blogging. I think it is a personal diary, considering the fact that it is an image maker shows it could be an avenue to show ones creativity, intelligence, prowess in ones area of strength. Hence, as academics, idea of aimless blogging is not an option.
At the end of the day, we have learnt to be creative; amidst the technologies that have explored we can choose. However the opportunities we have to be innovative depends on our workplaces and the size of our hearts.

COLOURS AND HUMAN
Apart from the effect colors have on the sense of sight, there association with moods and few religious interpretations that are attached to them, it is really unbelievable that there are other sides to colours. The HBMI training on Saturday proved that colours could be used to categorise humans.
With a colour in a quadrant of the circle, humans were categorised into four groups: blue, green, red and yellow. Each distinguishing humans based on temperament.
Really people are colours.
The Blue: These are the result-oriented.
The Green:The planners.
The Red: The relationship driven individuals.
The Yellow: The creative minded individuals.

WHAT IS DIGITIZATION?
This seems to be a very simple and direct question. However, a closer look suggests the subject requires more attention considering the questions raised by many concerning the scope and ambiguities as the concept has been defined in the CPD Class and generally in the library context.
Considering the word digitization, it was derived from the word 'digit'. It could be inferred that digitization has to do with digits. It literary means conversion to digits. Why digits? Every information on computer is represented in digits, binary digits, the images, texts, videos, audio, 3 dimensional images because all the computer understands is information in binary form (zeros and ones). Just any information in any form. Hence, any information in the physical form can only be converted to computer readable form if the information can be converted to zeros and ones.
The process of converting physical or analog objects to computer readable form involves the use of specialized hardware and software. Physical materials are materials that could be seen, while analog materials are materials on which information is coded on in analog formats, or formats that are not readable by computer eg cassette or VHS is a good form of analog information material. For texts and images, hardware like scanners and digital cameras are needed to convert the information into computer readable format. For 3 dimensional images, 3d image scanners are the hardware that are used. There are cassette and VHS to CD ROM converters for converting audio and audiovisual materials.
Coming back to the Library context, the definition of digitization sometimes include the purpose and what happens to digitized materials after the digitization process. Basically digitization in the library context means the conversion of library physical (print documents, 3 dimensional images, etc) and analog materials (VHS, cassettee etc) to computer readable format. All definitions of digitization revolve around this as some words or phrases could be substituted. For instance, 'physical and analog materials' could be replaced with 'hard copies' or 'hard materials' and computer readable formats could be replaced with 'soft format'.
Other definitions of digitizations which have stated that the conversion of digitized materials is to preserve and make the materials accessible to users have only added the essence of digitization. Hence, the expansion of the definition beyond the 'conversion' have only added the essence of digitization.

SHOULD LITERATURE SEARCH BE LEFT FOR NOVICE IN LIBRARIES?
While learning about Information Literacy today, the major question on my mind is 'should literature search in libraries be left for novice?'
Right from the definition of Information literacy itself which states that an Information literate individual is expected to have specific competencies which include the following:
It denotes that IL is not just an action, but a set of actions or skills that have to be acquired by training. It is obvious that this is the basic requirement of an information literate individual who should undertake literature search in the library.
Besides, the task of literature search requires a very deep understanding of the subject area while the IL skills are employed in the search duty. For instance, searching in medicine will require a very good understanding of medical field. Hence, I believe for efficient literature search in the libraries, trained assistants are recommended for such tasks.

- Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
- Evaluate information and its sources critically
- Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base

- Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally

THE MIND BLOWING GADGETS
The first week of the CPD programme featured the presentation of some mind blowing toys of the UNISA library. On display was the 3D printers and scanners. I was just recovering from the shock of being so uninformed about all these 'toys' when we were availed the opportunity to visit the UNISA library. I was not prepared for what I saw. I was totally dazed, to say the least surprised at the level of sophistication of the library. It is a mega and complex system simplified and made effective with the employment of automated systems. Of course the automated security system was no more alien to me by the time I entered the library. It was other systems that caught my attention.
THE BOOK LENDING SYSTEM:This automates the whole process of lending. This is absolutely amazing.
THE TELELIFT: An amazing innovative technology. For sending physical materials from one floor to another.

TUTORIALS
HOW TO ADD QR CODES TO YOUR E-MAIL SIGNATURES
Learning about QR Codes will definitely excite you. The ability to be innovative with this definitely makes a difference. Another advantage you ultimately have over others who know about the QR Code is your ability to code so much information on the QR Code image.
At the end of this short tutorial, you will be able to add QR Codes to your e-mail signature.
STEP 1. You need to know what e-mail signature is. Whenever you send e-mail, you need to put your name and contact below the e-mail. Something like:

This is an e-mail Signature.
You can set your e-mail signature on your e-mail account, with this you do not have to type your contact each time you send mails. Besides, you can add quotes to this signature and of course a qr-code.
STEP 2. You need to know how to set your e-mail signature. This is very simple.
First, login in to your Gmail account,
Click once on Settings on the top, right hand side of your Gmail account with this icon:

The drop down menu displays the following options

On the drop down, click on settings. The settings page will open, similar to this:
On this page, you have the opportunity do edit the settings of your e-mail. Among other things you can add a picture to your Google account, apart from from the e-mail Signature that could be made permanent. Scroll down to signature.

By default, No signature radio button is checked, click on the radio button below no signature radio button.
Type your name and Contact, you can also add quotes, etc
STEP 3: Now that you know how to customize your e-mail signature, the next step is learning how to create QR Code. This is equally very simple. You can do this on https://www.the-qrcode-generator.com/ by copying and pasting the texts you want to convert to QR Code. The created QR Code appears thus:

STEP 4: Click on the share button, another page appears similar to the one below:

STEP 5: Copy the image url, Go back to Gmail Settings page in Step 2. Click
the insert image button

STEP 6: Paste the image url and click on OK.
Sometimes this mighty not work immediately, just click on medium.
If this piece is useful at all, kindly drop a comment.

JUST A MONTH AGO: THE DAY OF LOVE

JUST A MONTH AGO: THE DAY OF LOVE
A month ago, from today, November 4, 2014,
It was a day so special
The dawn of dream come true
A day never to come its class
I call it the day of love
Because love made it what it was
It was the 'onening' with the one I love
Whose love is my life
Cause she has grown to become my heart
Just one heart for one
Not just the occupant of my heart
Nor the mere owner of my heart
She is my heart
The best in life I have
It was indeed the most savoured day of my life
I call it the day of love
Because love made it what it was
From her, my one and only
That had the courage to share
with me her life and destiny
Indeed love cannot be expressed
better than what she gave
with special reservation to the propitiation of Jesus my saviour
Although her love bore from His
I know because I can speak for my heart
I call it the day of love
Because love made it what it was
From him the great one I call father
Cause he gained a son
And never lost a daughter
From the very moment he opened his arms
And embraced me in love
I reckon love cannot be expressed better
than allowing one of the few that is more dear
than all the world and what it holds
Love and own another
Especially one who is an alien
And be loved and owned by same
While all the attention and love
Once enjoyed by him becomes of another
I call it the day of love
Because love made it what it was
from her siblings that accepted to love me
Regardless of my frailties
and choose to make one of their own
Like no other call me their brother
I treat me so, in deed not just verbally
it is an expression of love than anyone can
And today I belong this family
That their love birthed me into
I call it the day of love
Because love made it what it was
from two mothers who prayed their heart
and God's favour gave answers
Today my dreams I realize
The two mothers are mine
The first, bore me for nine months
and in love continues to bear and love me
The second, in love loves me
and both say 'yes, you can' in their kneels
Written a month after my wedding,
at the University of Pretoria
While on CPD programme
Having left Nigeria barely a month after tying the nuptial knot
Specially dedicated to my wife, love, life and heart.
